About 40 years ago, Frank Rudy, an aeronautical engineer at NASA, came to Nike with an idea. Frank Rudy had come up with a concept for a cushioning shoe. This was the beginning of a revolution in the footwear industry.

Today, the Air Max is one of Nike's most profitable products. The Air Max has its own holiday, every year in March 'Air Max Day' is celebrated and new releases are announced. The different types of Air Max, innovations, collaborations and cultural moments have ensured that the Air Max has a worldwide loyal fan base.

There are several examples that show that the Air Max has a fan base worldwide. In Italy in the late '90s, ravers and graffiti artists were so fascinated with the Air Max 97 that they gave the shoe its own nickname 'Le Silver'. In neighboring France, the Air Max Plus got its own nickname: 'La Requin' or 'The Shark'. In America, the shoe appeared in video clips 'Hate It Or Love It' and 'Get you steppin', which greatly increased the fan base in America. In England, the shoe received a lot of attention from rappers such as Skepta and Dizzee Rascal.

In 1987, the Nike Air Max 1 was released. This sneaker was designed by Tinker Hatfield, who also helped design the Air Jordan, and it was the first shoe to visibly contain air. Not everyone was an immediate fan of Hatfield's design. According to Hatfield, several people thought the draft went too far and others even wanted him fired.
